Katherine Spearing and Cait West in Conversation
Join Katherine Spearing and Cait West for a conversation about spiritual abuse, religious trauma, and how we heal from the wounds that church can cause. They will share their similar experiences in the Christian patriarchy movement (a school of thought that teaches women's submission to their father, then husband) and the evangelical church and how they broke free from high-control religion and found both healing and empowerment.
Both authors will have their books available for purchase and signing after the talk.
A Thousand Tiny Paper Cuts is a raw, arresting dive beneath the glossy surface of American evangelicalism, exposing the often-invisible damage of spiritual abuse. Drawing on her upbringing in the Christian Patriarchy Movement, her former role as a ministry leader, and her work founding the nonprofit Tears of Eden, Katherine Spearing offers an unflinching look at the wounds that religious institutions cause, which are impossible to ignore, and helps you name and understand them.
The book's title evokes the nature of these injuries-small, subtle, and nefarious-cuts that bleed out over a lifetime. With piercing insight and a voice both tender and fierce, Spearing unpacks power imbalances, spiritual gaslighting, and the silent corrosion of autonomy under abusive religious systems.
From the application of shame to the shattering of trust, she exposes what happens when faith is used as a weapon, and what it takes to walk away. With moments of wit, clarity, and deep compassion, this survivor-centered narrative doesn't just expose abuse; it provides a path toward a thriving life.
A Thousand Tiny Paper Cuts is essential reading for anyone deconstructing harmful faith, supporting survivors, or daring to imagine a life beyond the confines of religious control.
Katherine Spearing, MA, CTRC, is the founder of Tears of Eden, a nonprofit supporting survivors of spiritual abuse and is a Certified Trauma Recovery Practitioner with a Master of Arts in Religion and Cultures. For five seasons, she hosted the groundbreaking podcast Uncertain, pioneering pivotal conversations around abuse in churches. In addition to working with survivors of trauma and abuse, she is an author, sought-after podcast guest, and advocate for women reclaiming their autonomy after systemic oppression.
Cait West is a writer and editor based in Traverse City, Michigan. Her work has been published in The Revealer, Religion Dispatches, Newsweek, and The Christian Century, among others. Writing from Trauma: How to Write and Publish Your Story of Abuse and Healing
As Maya Angelou said, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” When we write our personal stories of abuse, we must first face our own trauma, which can be both painful and healing. But how do we write about these memories without retraumatizing ourselves? Cait will walk us through her process of writing a memoir about abuse, from early drafts to the decisions she made about changing names and how much of her story to share publicly.

Angela Herrington and Cait West in Conversation
Join authors Angela Herrington and Cait West for a conversation about the impacts of Christian patriarchy.
Angela Herrington’s newest work, Embracing the Old Witch in the Woods, is perfect for readers looking to challenge limiting beliefs, confront systemic injustices, and reclaim their inherent worth and wisdom.
You can RSVP here: https://events.humanitix.com/angela-herrington-and-cait-west-sbgr
About the Book:
"Through themes of aging, pleasure, intuition, and emotional expression, Herrington invites a return to the body as a trusted partner rather than something to conquer or correct." --Booklist
Untangle from patriarchal Christian attitudes toward women, and tap into the deep well of feminine wisdom.
Christian patriarchy teaches that women are dangerous, manipulative, and untrustworthy. Whether painting women as the archetypal old witch in the woods or the biblical temptress, toxic religion vilifies their wisdom and uses fear to maintain male power. And these harmful stereotypes aren't just historical; they persist in modern religious, societal, and political rhetoric, where confident women are called "nasty" or "radical."
But there's something they don't want you to know about that old witch in the woods: She deeply trusts her sacred gifts and hard-earned wisdom. Embracing the Old Witch in the Woods is an invitation to reconnect with feminine wisdom that has been dismissed, maligned, and even persecuted over the centuries. When women lean into this wisdom, they learn how to trust their intuition, draw on their creativity, and lead with empathy.
Christian patriarchy separates us from ourselves, each other, and our Creator as well as from the traditions, practices, and stories that should have been passed down through generations. Angela J. Herrington draws on more than a decade of experience as a faith deconstruction coach and seminary-trained online pastor to offer practical strategies and practices for readers to rediscover and tap into deep ancestral knowledge that once defined and empowered women.
Embracing the Old Witch in the Woods is a road map for readers to challenge limiting beliefs, confront systemic injustices, and reclaim their inherent worth and wisdom. When we reclaim feminine wisdom, we liberate ourselves, our communities, and our souls, gaining strength and resilience through our connection to ourselves and to each other.

Join authors Cait West (author of Rift: A Memoir of Breaking Away from Christian Patriarchy), Sara Moslener (author of Virgin Nation), and Dawn Burns (author of Evangelina Everyday) for a night of healing and inspiration. They will discuss religious trauma, purity culture, and how we can move forward toward a better future.
The Evangelical Purity Movement, which began in the early 1990s, established a sexual ethic based on strict gender roles, racial purity, and control over women's bodies. It promoted abstinence-only and used a narrow interpretation of the Bible to justify shame and control over women's bodies, resulting in trauma that is still felt today, decades later. Midwest authors Cait West, Sara Moslener, and Dawn Burns have come together to shed light on the harms of the Evangelical Purity Movement and the Christian Patriarchy and to offer stories of healing and inspiration.
This event is FREE and open to everyone. At the end of the authors' talk, audience members can participate in a Q&A session. All three authors will also be available to sign copies of their books. Books are available in-store or online before and after the event.

International Cultic Studies Association Annual Conference
“Stay-at-Home Daughters: The Unique Challenges of Women Raised in the Christian Patriarchy Movement” by Cait West and Katherine Spearing (virtual presentation)
Abstract: Culture wars and backlash against the feminist movement in the 1990s led to the rise of an ideology called Christian patriarchy in the United States. Organizations such as Vision Forum and grassroots magazines and newsletters such as Patriarch spread this ideology, gaining followers across evangelical denominations, many of whom continue to follow this lifestyle today. This movement established men as the leaders of the church, and fathers as cult leaders of their families. Those raised as female in this movement were kept isolated and homeschooled and were often forbidden higher education, dating, and working outside the home, hence their name “stay-at-home daughters.” Instead, they were trained to propagate the ideology by becoming homemakers, told to marry and bear as many children as possible. This panel will explore the specific challenges that stay-at-home daughters face when leaving their community, from delayed developmental learning (adolescence) to learning independence in their twenties and thirties. While previous literature has focused on women in patriarchal marriages, unmarried daughters have not been studied extensively in this movement. These survivors usually require extensive support to find happiness and wholeness after growing up in a high-control environment. This includes learning to be independent, access to education, and mental health services.
