“Stay-at-Home Daughters: The Unique Challenges of Women Raised in the Christian Patriarchy Movement” by Cait West and Katherine Spearing (virtual presentation)

Abstract: Culture wars and backlash against the feminist movement in the 1990s led to the rise of an ideology called Christian patriarchy in the United States. Organizations such as Vision Forum and grassroots magazines and newsletters such as Patriarch spread this ideology, gaining followers across evangelical denominations, many of whom continue to follow this lifestyle today. This movement established men as the leaders of the church, and fathers as cult leaders of their families. Those raised as female in this movement were kept isolated and homeschooled and were often forbidden higher education, dating, and working outside the home, hence their name “stay-at-home daughters.” Instead, they were trained to propagate the ideology by becoming homemakers, told to marry and bear as many children as possible. This panel will explore the specific challenges that stay-at-home daughters face when leaving their community, from delayed developmental learning (adolescence) to learning independence in their twenties and thirties. While previous literature has focused on women in patriarchal marriages, unmarried daughters have not been studied extensively in this movement. These survivors usually require extensive support to find happiness and wholeness after growing up in a high-control environment. This includes learning to be independent, access to education, and mental health services.

Festival of Faith & Writing

  • Grand Rapids United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join Cait West and Liz Charlotte Grant for their Lunch Circle, titled “Writers Engaging Nature and Science.”

Description: By discussing creative nonfiction writers who integrate the natural world into their work, this circle will encourage participants to use nature and scientific research to inspire their own writing. One session will focus on using nature metaphors to find deeper meaning in our personal narratives; the other session will offer insights into incorporating science storytelling into braided and lyric essays, including how and where to find unique stories, how to prune and connect those stories to the rest of the piece, and how to work with a fact-checker.

For more information about the Festival, check out their website. If you’d like to get information about how to register for this Lunch Circle, click here.

“No One’s Property: A Writers’ Roundtable on Bodily Autonomy, Reproductive Rights, and Evangelicalism”

Abstract: In her 2015 article “Evangelical Purity Culture Is Not about Sex–It’s about Power,” researcher and scholar Sara Moslener writes, "I’m a big believer that most academics are really writing their own stories. The more authentic we are with those stories, the more people connect to the histories we are trying to uncover." Like Moslener, creative writers Cait West, Dawn Burns, Bex Miller, and Bree Strayer find the same to be true of their creative work, be it memoir, fiction, or poetry.

We are focusing our pieces around bodily autonomy and reproductive rights, each of us writing from a background steeped in evangelicalism and Christian patriarchy, using this experience to understand our current culture after the overthrow of Roe v. Wade. As a roundtable, we will be pairing individual readings with discussion around how our writing is informed by our religious upbringings and experiences and how this creative work is an act of taking back the narrative in a world where women have lost or are at risk of losing their autonomy.
